The Blackhawk Education Foundation provided a grant to the Bloomer High School Agriculture Department for the purchase of a Fork Farms Flex Farm. The Flex Farm is a self-contained hydroponic growing system. Each day students evaluate all four towers for water pH, nutrient levels, and overall plant health while making changes as needed. Simultaneously managing these towers requires a lot of responsibility from the students; however, it allows the students to practice problem solving and decision making skills. The students in these agriculture classes are using their hands-on classroom experiences and gaining transferable skills that will carry them through all aspects of their life. Lettuce grown using the Flex Farm is provided to the district’s food service program and used to produce healthy salads for lunch.

The Ag. Department has also been asked to work with the Fork Farms Company and the Seed Savers Exchange program to conduct trials for seeds! This is a great partnership for the school and these companies, but it is an even better opportunity for the students to take action in real life seed trials. They tested a variety of Mustard Green Seeds this year, and they were able to provide a great deal of feedback to the companies.
